Why the east breaks differently
We work out of Mitcham VIC 3132, roughly in the middle of the eastern belt from Richmond through Wantirna — so the suburbs below are a drive, not a trip. No shopfront; we come to you.
Building a deck or renovating a bathroom? See decks, bathroom carpentry and carpentry repairs.
Melbourne's eastern suburbs are not one housing stock, and the timber problems change as you move out. Knowing which belt a house sits in tells you a lot about what has failed before anyone opens a gate.
Closer in — Richmond, Hawthorn, Kew, Camberwell, Balwyn, Surrey Hills, Glen Iris, Malvern — the interwar and Californian bungalow streets are mostly a repair proposition rather than a replacement one. Sash windows, front doors, porch timbers and internal joinery from that period were built out of good timber and are usually worth fixing rather than tearing out.
Through the postwar brick-veneer belt — Ashburton, Burwood, Blackburn, Mount Waverley, Box Hill — the brick is usually fine and the timber is what gives out. Window frames, fascia and barge boards from that era are commonly softwood, and the south and west elevations take the weather. That's where the rot starts: a sill that's gone spongy at one end, a fascia board soft behind the gutter line.
The 1970s and 80s stock through Doncaster, Templestowe, Donvale, Vermont, Ringwood and Wantirna brings a different list. Big timber-framed sliding doors that have dropped, swelled or lost their weather seal, and rear decks now well past the end of their working life — boards flexing underfoot, bearers and joists that need a proper look before anyone decides whether it's a board job or a rebuild.
Suburbs covered — Richmond → Wantirna
The whole eastern belt roughly from Richmond through Wantirna and the suburbs between, working out of Mitcham. Grouped by the road that gets us there.
Check your suburb or postcode. Not sure? Call and ask — the boundary is about the drive, not inventing a shopfront.
Also (inner bayside)
We also cover Albert Park, Middle Park and St Kilda — a short, honest extension alongside the eastern belt, not a fake bayside corridor page. If you're in one of those three, check your suburb on the checker and send the job through.
What we get called out for in the east
The work falls into three groups: timber decks, bathroom renovation carpentry, and repairs. On the repair side, that means rotten door jambs and sills. Doors that stick or won't latch after a wet winter. Deck boards that have gone soft. Fascia and eaves timber. Gates that have dropped. Fence palings, rails and posts.
That work is covered in more detail on the carpentry repairs page, including what it typically costs and where we stop — we're a carpenter, so electrical, plumbing and gas are not ours and we'll say so at the quote.
Where the job is specifically a door — a new one supplied and hung, an old one eased, or a frame and sill replaced back to sound timber — the doors and frames page covers it. Bigger outdoor work runs through decking and outdoor structures, and structural work through timber framing.
Mon–Sat, 7am–6pm. If your suburb is right on the edge of the list, call and ask — some weeks we're further across town than others.
